Why Password Security Matters So Much
According to current statistics, over 443 data breaches are reported to European authorities daily. A large proportion is due to weak or reused passwords. The good news: with the right measures, you can effectively protect yourself.
Rule 1: Length Beats Complexity
A 20-character password made of regular words is more secure than 8-character gibberish. Use passphrases like "CatJumpsOverMoonfish42".
Rule 2: Never Reuse Passwords
Every account needs a unique password. If one service is hacked, all other accounts are automatically at risk if you use the same password.
Rule 3: Use a Password Manager
Bitwarden (free, open source), 1Password or KeePass help you securely manage hundreds of unique passwords. You only remember one master password.
Rule 4: Two-Factor Authentication Everywhere
2FA is the single most important measure after the password manager. Even if your password is stolen, a second factor (authenticator app, SMS) is required.
Rules 5-10
5. Recognize phishing – always check the URL before logging in.
6. Use passkeys where possible.
7. Regularly check if your email appeared in data leaks (Dark Web Monitoring).
8. Change passwords immediately after known data breaches.
9. Don't use public WiFi for sensitive logins without VPN.
10. Never trust a link in an unexpected email.
