Apple iOS 26.5: New Privacy Features – But Also New Risks

Apple released the beta of iOS 26.5 with end-to-end encryption for RCS. At the same time, Apple is building an advertising infrastructure that users should carefully configure.

iOS 26.5 – Progress and Contradiction

In April 2026, Apple released the public beta of iOS 26.5. The update brings a mix of privacy-enhancing and data-intensive innovations – typical for Apple.

The Good: RCS Encryption

Finally: Apple enables end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhone and Android. This means messages between the two ecosystems can no longer be read by network operators or authorities.

The Problematic: Advertising Infrastructure

At the same time, iOS 26.5 introduces a Suggested Locations feature in Apple Maps, recommending destinations based on search history and location – building an advertising infrastructure Apple plans to launch in North America in summer.

What You Should Check

After the update, check: Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Apple Maps, and Settings → Privacy → Apple Advertising. Disable what you don't want.
